We know online communication isn’t the same as an in-person visit to the vet for pet care, but remote veterinary care is a huge step in making sure our pets are safe and living their best pet lives.
Since the COVID pandemic started in March 2020, a lot of pet owners are wondering how they can best care for their pet’s health while adhering to social distancing guidelines. It can be a tricky shift, but to have a conversation with a vet from the comfort of your own couch is so convenient, and at times can help you receive quick treatment for your furry friend.
Looking for an online veterinarian? Here’s how to find the perfect one.
Step 1: Research what virtual vet services can do for you
If there are simple pet-related questions that you need to ask a vet, a virtual vet chat is a perfect scenario for you to get fast answers. With access to licensed veterinarians online, your question can be answered in a phone call, live chat, or FaceTime. From diet to grooming, to behavioral issues, preventive measures, and more, a virtual vet gives pet parents what they need.
If you need guidance in figuring out if your pet’s condition is an emergency or not, a virtual veterinary medicine visit can help you make that decision.
Step 2: Research what virtual vet services cannot do for you
For most animal health issues, on-demand virtual veterinary services are all that you’ll need. However, that doesn’t mean they replace in-person veterinary medical clinic visits. In fact, a virtual vet cannot prescribe or diagnose your pet unless they’ve recently done a hands-on exam of your pet. This federal mandate is called a VCPR.
Establishing the VCPR (veterinarian-client-patient relationship) is making sure you’ve had a recent office visit and a hands-on exam with the licensed vet you’re speaking to. If you have, then your vet may be able to diagnose or treat your pet. If not, they can still answer questions and offer advice on non-emergency health care issues.
Step 3: Know when to seek emergency veterinary care
Unfortunately, virtual sessions can’t be used for everything in pet health care. If your pet is experiencing any of the health issues below, contact your in-person vet and go directly to an emergency animal hospital:
- Seizure
- Can’t walk or stand
- Difficulty breathing
- Pale or blueish gum
- Swollen abdomen
- Uncontrolled bleeding
- Persistent vomiting or diarrhea
- Inability to urinate
- Unconsciousness
At the end of the day, there’s nothing like the peace of mind knowing your pet is going to be okay. And in these trying times, online vets, like Airvet, are here to help when we can.
If you’re ever in need of a virtual visit or need an answer to a question you’ve been dying to ask, we’ll be here when you call. We can’t wait to meet you!
